Indoorswomen

We are a podcast of the geeky pop cultural persuasion. Two intellectually curious and geekily inclined BFFs discuss stuff we like (and don't) and play silly games. Hilarity often ensues.

Join us for Trek Talk! We boldly go into the world of CBS's new series Star Trek: Discovery.

Talking points include: Is Klingon romance logistically possible? What's up with those gross unwrapped fortune cookies? Could there be more lens flare?!

We also share our thoughts on the other Star franchise, like the new Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer and From a Certain Point of View.

Oh, and Blade Runner 2049!

(Tweet at us if you understand why this is our episode title! Bonus nerd points!)

It's our parody episode! Spoofs and references abound as we discuss our favorite franchises, our favorite franchise parodies, and our favorite parody franchises. Whew. I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue! Highlights include Airplane! and other Leslie Nielsen vehicles, Bill Murray extravaganzas, and, of course, Spaceballs, Galaxy Quest, The Princess Bride, and Enchanted.

Bonus: The game this week is fictional five and the category is creature feature!

In this episode, we're talking all things space. Space travel, space tropes, spacemen, etc. Plus we're offering tons of space-related pop culture recommendations along the way, from Sunshine to Moon and just about every franchise with "star" in the name.

We also play a game of TV Tropes Roulette and end with our random recs.

Correction: When Jen refers to the E.T. "DVD", she of course means "VHS tape" because DVDs weren't invented yet. #old

Hey guys, it's summer and we have had a lot of reruns lately so we are super excited to bring you some brand new original content! We are discussing our favorite summer movies and books! What gives us that front porch sitting, toes in the water, sun and sand and fun and friendship feeling? Answers include Judy Blume novels, sci-fi romps, and summer blockbusters like Jaws and Independence Day.

A discussion of summer movies wouldn't be complete without our (gushing) review of the adorable Spider-man: Homecoming! Plus, our random recs: MST3K: The Return and Rick and Morty!

Hi all! We have another re-run for you guys today. It's one of my favorites and I hope you enjoy it. I recorded a short BRAND NEW BONUS INTRO for this episode in which I give a couple of new random recs. Enjoy and we will see you in a couple weeks.

<3 Jen

Original Show Notes:

Hi everyone! Today we have some new excitingness for you! We introduce a segment called "Strength of Character" where we discuss our favorite characters from any medium or genre and explain why we love them. Our definition of “strength” is not “most kickass” nor even “most likeable”. Instead, we want to identify those characters that keep us coming back to the same shows, films, and books over and over and what makes them so intriguing.  First nominees: Capt. John Yossarian and Lorelai Gilmore. How's that for variety?

Next up, we discuss retrofuturism! Flying cars, floating homes, robot butlers, and nuclear powered everything. Why were these tropes so popular? What are our favorite pop culture representations? We wrestle with the complicated concepts of viewing the future from the past, viewing the past from the future, and viewing both simultaneously from the present. We also discover we both experience nostalgia for a future that never came to pass with our discussion of Tomorrowland. Plus, discussions of classic and modern science fiction and visits to the World's Fair and colonies on Mars.

Last, we have our random recommendations, wherein Meg chats about her long-term love of Project Runway and Jen discusses her newly minted passion for Bob's Burgers.

Thanks for listening!

Jen and Meg are on summer vacation (jk we're both up to our eyeballs in work), so it's rerun time! We bring you: Never Judge a Book by Its Movie (Or a Graphic Novel by Its Adapted TV Series?)

In this episode, we ask ourselves the age-old question: which to consume first, the book or the movie? The answer may surprise you! In our discussion, we relate our experiences with various forms of adapted media including Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, superhero movies and comics, Game of Thrones, Gone Girl, Harry Potter, and more!

We also play the hit card game "Geek Out" and try to stump each other with trivia!

Stay tuned for our random recs: The "My Dad Wrote a Porno" podcast and Westworld. Spoiler: They are awesome.

The thrilling conclusion to listener questions! (For now...We had too much fun to not do this again sometime.)

Which adaptations deserve do-overs? Which TV shows could we have totally written better? What are our Enneagram types? Well, you'll just have to listen to find out.

Plus, we've got random recommendations re: railroads and romance.

You've got questions, we've got answers! The Indoorswomen open up the mailbag and tackle those hard-hitting questions. Like, what's so great about pop culture anyway? How did we meet? And, are we a Hamilton or a Burr?

We'll get to even more questions in the upcoming Part II.

Marry, Sex, Kill is also back by popular demand. Spoilers: One of us beds Gollum.

Today we are chatting about documentaries! Stick with us, because even if you aren't a fan of the usual documentary fare, we are sure you'll find something to like in our choices about unusual competitions (Somm, Barista, King of Kong), or blowing the lid off the MPAA rating system (This Film is Not Yet Rated), or chronicling the life of one of our favorite characters/actors (For the Love of Spock).

And stay for our gushing review of Wonder Woman!

Today we are talking Pop Culture Comfort Food and Pop Culture Self Care. This is the pop culture that makes us feel good, it feeds the soul - the old favorites we turn to in times of stress or sickness. In other words, Treat. Yo. Self.

We delve into Disney (and Buffy) singalongs, books with creased covers and broken spines, period dramas like Downton Abbey, podcasts (of course), and other favorites.

Plus, random recs of recent HBO programming (Big Little Lies, anyone?) and the pocket cast app.

Special shoutouts to our awesome new friends in the podcast community including:

People still get the "Yo, Dawg" meme, right? Right?!

This episode kicks off our Women Who Stare at Tropes series. We're talking bottle episodes this time around: Buffy, Doctor Who, Angel, Homicide: Life on the Street, Friends, and Sealab 2021, for starters.

Plus, we play a game of TV Tropes Roulette. It's trope-tacular!

What's your favorite bottle episode? Holler at us on Twitter @indoorswomen (or, you know, compose a polite tweet).

You are invited to our virtual slumber party! Meg and Jen, so rarely in the same place at the same time, got to record this in Jen's living room, while having a real-life slumber party. With wine.

We play games (the classic Marry Sex Kill, plus a pop culture version of M.A.S.H.). We also talk 'ships for the first time since our pilot episode. Are you a Bones/Booth shipper? How about Niles/Daphne? Scully/Mulder? Rapunzel/Flynn? Tony/Pepper? Iron Man/Captain America? Shout out to us on twitter: @indoorswomen

Last episode, we assigned each other pop culture homework. Now it's time for our pop culture report cards!

We discuss what we thought about Battlestar Galactica and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Especially the important bits of both shows. You know, Avatar's adorable hybrid animals, the Cylons' limited-edition models, and how this all relates to zombie movies somehow.

Bonus: Geek Out! makes another appearance, and we leave you with our random recommendations. Something we don't recommend: naming a drink "Pocari Sweat." Mmmm.

Today's topic is:  What pop culture makes us cry? Whether it is joy, sadness, or excitement, what makes us a little misty? Spoiler: we have never cried. Ever. Ok, that's a lie.

We list sad themes, specific moments, crying triggers, and Meg does extensive psychological research to justify being a giant crybaby. From the emotional manipulation of sad music and tense storylines, it basically all makes us blubber. Especially Tom Hanks. Damn that Tom Hanks. It’s the least sad podcast about crying ever! Plus, memes of the past!

Bonus: a discussion of that really long episode of Jimmy Kimmel: the Oscars! We chat about our excitement about Moonlight's win, our horror over the mix-up, and our ambivalence about Jimmy Kimmel's hosting.

Tune in next week for a discussion of the pop culture homework we gleefully assign each other at the end of this episode. It's fun to make people do things.

Hi all! We were so excited to be back in the recording studio (aka our respective homes) after a month away! We kick off our return with a new Strength of Character segment, inducting The Office's Michael Scott and The Mary Tyler Moore Show's Mary Richards into our little Hall of Fame.

Our main event today is Pop Culture Completism. What is it about someone that makes us want to pursue all of their work? Do we do this? Do you?

We talk about directors and writers (Joss Whedon, Jane Espenson, Charlie Kaufman, Wes Anderson), authors (Donna Tartt, Neal Stephenson, Rainbow Rowell, JK Rowling), and actors (Ewan McGregor, Dan Stevens), plus many more!

Tweet at us (@indoorswomen) with your thoughts on completism!

Bonus ending feature: our Oscar predictions! We fearlessly predict some of the bigger awards, even though we aren't caught up on our movie watching. Tune in next time for Oscar commentary.

Hi all! We have a re-run for you today: one of our favorite episodes about superheroes! It is also the first episode in which we play "fictional five".

Our main segment is about superhero fatigue, in which we discuss both comic book movie/tv universes but mostly Marvel! Superheroes - passe or here to stay? Superheroes have made the jump from comic book pages to screens big and small. Is the culture saturated? Who are our favorites? Who are we tired of? Also: if we had superpowers, what would they be?

Plus, tangents!

Spoiler: Meg and Jen are not particularly "Superhero Fatigued".

It's the long-awaited sequel to our last podcast on Sherlock! We address comparisons between Sherlock and Doctor Who, favorite episodes, and we tackle the age-old question of "Benedict Cumberbatch: handsome or lizardy?"

It's no question that the Indoorswomen are big Sherlock Holmes fans and we are particularly fond of the modern-day adaptation "Sherlock" (BBC/PBS). We are, in fact, such big fans, that we had to split this episode into two parts due to excessive yammering. See you in two weeks for the (not so) stunning conclusion.

Today we are discussing “Elementary, My dear Watson”, and other things Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes never said. We are talking modern Sherlock adaptations, primarily the BBC show, the fourth series of which premiered this week. What do we like and dislike about these modern imaginings? What are our theories? What are our favorite episodes? And, the most important question of them all: is Benedict Cumberbatch handsome?

P.S. CPR was invented in 1956 and became a prominent life saving device in the early 1960s.

Note: if you haven't seen the BBC/PBS Sherlock adaptation, this episode contains some spoilers. Also, GO WATCH IT!

What's this? What's this? It's our ode to some of our favorite Tim Burton movies, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, and the unusual blending of creepiness, humor, and Christmastime. Plus, our new adventures this year and a few good recommendations for you guys!

Ok, we won't have rap battles, but we do appreciate them. This week's podcast is about musicals! Musicals, if you don’t know, are plays in which, to quote Mack from the movie Sabrina,“the actors periodically dance about and burst into song”. We discuss our favorites, live shows we have attended, movie and television musicals, and we devote some serious time to the musical phenomenon, Hamilton. We tried not to sing too much. But there is a little singing.

We ask the big questions: Listen to the soundtrack beforehand or wait? Live performances or Movie adaptations? Just what makes musicals so enjoyable anyway?

Big mentions include Hamilton, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Disney Musicals, Once More With Feeling (the Buffy Musical), Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Smash, and Book of Mormon. Special feature: reminiscences about our high school's performances of The Music Man, Oklahoma!, and Grease.

If you are a musical theater lover or novice, you might find something in here for you!

Extras: Geek news about amazing new trailers and collaborations plus our random recs: Yuri!!! on ICE and Crash Course on Youtube.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! We decided to release this early so you can listen in airports or while making pies.

We start off by inducting Lucille Bluth and CJ Cregg into our little Hall of Fame in the segment "Strength of Character".

The Main Event: We have experienced (or will experience) so much amazing culture this November! We take a deep dive into Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Arrival, as well as chat about Gilmore Girls, The Grand Tour and The Crown.

Plus, we continue our Pop Culture Traditions from last year and mention more seasonal entertainment including episodes of The West Wing and New Girl, and the seasonal podcast Til Death Do Us Blart.
